Watermarks that do their job
A watermark marks a document's status so a copy cannot be mistaken for something it is not. DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, a company name across a quotation — the point is that it travels with the file and survives being printed, forwarded and photographed.
Legible, but not in the way
The usual mistake is a watermark so faint it disappears when printed, or so heavy the document underneath is hard to read. Diagonal, large, and light grey at around 15 to 30 percent opacity is the combination that survives a photocopier while leaving the text readable.
- Diagonal placement crosses more of the page than horizontal, so it is harder to crop out.
- Large and faint beats small and dark — a small watermark in one corner is trivially removed.
- Grey works on both light and dark pages; colours can clash with content.
- Behind the text keeps the document readable. Over the text is harder to remove but harder to read.
What a watermark is not
It is a deterrent and a label, not security. A determined person can remove one. If the document must not be edited or printed at all, that is a permissions job — protect the file with a password — and if something on the page must not be readable, that is redaction. Watermarking sits alongside those rather than replacing them.

Can I put the watermark behind the text instead of over it?
Yes — there's a behind/in-front toggle, plus opacity, so it stays readable either way.
Will the watermark appear on every page?
By default, yes, which is what you usually want — a watermark on the first page only is easy to lose when pages are separated.
Can the watermark be removed by the person I send it to?
With effort, yes. It is a visible label rather than protection. Combine it with a password if editing needs to be prevented.
Does adding a watermark reduce quality?
No. It is drawn as an additional layer over the existing page, which is left as it was.
