Worth knowing

Charts and SmartArt do not render. A chart in a .pptx is a description of data series pointing at a cached table, not a picture, and SmartArt is a layout engine's output rather than stored shapes — drawing either means reimplementing that engine, and something that looks approximately right but plots wrong is worse than an honest omission.

Fonts your device does not have are substituted, which can change where lines break. This affects every tool that is not PowerPoint itself. If a deck uses an unusual typeface and the spacing matters, check the result before sending it.

Animations, transitions and speaker notes are not included — none of them has a meaning on paper. Only .pptx works; the pre-2007 .ppt is a binary format no browser can read.

Why this one converts better than the others

Of the Office formats, PowerPoint is the one that turns into a PDF almost exactly — and it is worth knowing why, because it is a structural reason rather than a lucky one.

A Word document has to be re-flowed: it describes intent, and the layout engine decides where lines break. A spreadsheet has to be re-fitted onto paper it was never sized for. But a slide is already a fixed canvas. Every shape on it carries an explicit position and size, stored to the nearest 1/914400th of an inch, and that is exactly the model a PDF page uses. There is nothing to infer. A converter only has to read the coordinates and honour them.

What comes across

  • Every shape at its exact position and size, in the original stacking order, including shapes inside groups — which carry their own nested coordinate space.
  • Fills: solid, gradient with its real angle and colour stops, picture fills, and theme colours with the tint and luminance modifiers that turn one accent colour into six.
  • Outlines with their true width, colour and dash pattern; rounded corners, ellipses and the common preset shapes.
  • Text with its font, size, weight, colour, alignment, line spacing, bullets and numbering — and vertical anchoring, which is what puts a title on its intended baseline rather than at the top of its box.
  • Pictures, including cropped ones, at the crop the deck specified.
  • Tables with per-cell fills, borders, merged cells and column widths.
  • The slide background, inherited from the layout or master when the slide itself does not set one.

The inheritance nobody sees

Here is the detail that separates a conversion that works from one that looks broken. Open a .pptx, look at the XML for a slide, and the title shape very often has no position at all. It is a placeholder: it inherits its position, size, font, size, colour and alignment from the slide layout, which in turn inherits from the slide master.

A converter that reads only the slide finds a shape with no coordinates and puts it at the top-left corner in a default font. Every title on every slide lands in the wrong place. Following the chain — slide, then layout, then master, matching placeholders by index first and type second — is not an optimisation. It is the difference between a deck and a mess.

Text that PowerPoint already shrank

When you type more into a text box than fits, PowerPoint quietly scales the text down and records the factor it used. That number has to be read and applied, because the box is reproduced at exactly the size the deck states — so text at full size would overflow it. It is a small field in the XML and the single most common cause of overflowing text in converted decks.

What is left out, and why

The honest limitation that does affect ordinary slides is fonts. If a deck uses a typeface your device does not have, the browser substitutes the nearest match, and a substitute has different letter widths, so a line can wrap a word earlier or later. That applies to every tool that is not PowerPoint itself, including the server-based ones unless they happen to have your font installed.

Questions people ask

How accurate is the conversion?

More accurate than converting a Word document, and for a structural reason. A slide is already a fixed canvas: every shape carries an explicit position and size, which is exactly how a PDF page works. There is no reflowing or re-fitting to guess at, so shapes land where the deck says they land — including grouped shapes, rotation, gradient fills, outlines, cropped pictures and tables.

Does it keep my slide size?

Yes. The PDF page is sized from the slide, so a 16:9 deck gives 16:9 pages and a 4:3 deck gives 4:3 pages, with no margins added and nothing scaled. One slide per page, in order.

Why does some text sit slightly differently?

Almost always a font. If your deck uses a typeface that is not installed on the device doing the converting, the browser substitutes the closest match, and a substitute has different letter widths — so a line can wrap a word earlier or later. Where PowerPoint had already shrunk text to fit its box, that shrink factor is read from the file and applied, so it should not overflow.

Are my speaker notes included?

No. This converts the slides as they appear when presented. If you need a handout with notes, PowerPoint's own Print dialogue can lay out notes pages, and you can convert that output.

Is my presentation uploaded anywhere?

No. The .pptx is unzipped, read and rendered inside your browser tab, and the PDF is written there too. Nothing leaves the device — worth knowing for an unannounced product deck or anything under embargo.
