Putting PNG images into a document
PNG is a lossless format, so the images are placed into the PDF exactly as they are. Nothing is recompressed and no detail is discarded. Screenshots, diagrams and line art all come through with their edges intact.
PNG is the right source for text
PNG stores sharp edges perfectly, which is why screenshots and diagrams look crisp where the same content saved as JPG picks up a faint halo around every letter. If you are assembling screenshots into a document, starting from PNG gives a noticeably cleaner result.
Transparency has to become something
PDF pages are not transparent, so any see-through area in a PNG has to be filled. White is the sensible default and matches the page. It is worth knowing in advance if your image was designed to sit on a coloured background — a white logo on transparency will vanish into the page.
Order and page fit
- Images are placed one per page, in filename order, so number them 01, 02, 03 rather than 1, 2, 10.
- Fitting the image inside the page keeps all of it and leaves a margin; filling the page crops the edges.
- Very large PNGs make large PDFs, because nothing is being compressed. Compress the finished document if it needs to be emailed.

What happens to transparent areas?
They're filled with white, because PDFs don't display transparency consistently across readers.
Will my PNG lose quality in the PDF?
No. The image is embedded as-is, so what goes in is what comes out.
Why is my PDF so much larger than the images?
Because PNG is lossless and stays that way inside the document. A folder of PNGs will produce a bigger PDF than the same pictures as JPGs — compress the result if size matters more than perfect fidelity.
Can I mix PNG and JPG images in one PDF?
Yes. Each image is placed on its own page in its own format; the document does not care that they differ.
