Worth knowing

JPG cannot store transparency. Anything clear in the SVG comes out white — use SVG to PNG if that matters.

JPG compression is lossy. For flat-colour artwork like a logo, PNG is usually both sharper and smaller.

Read this before choosing JPG

For most SVG artwork, PNG is the better choice, and it is worth thirty seconds to know why before you export. SVGs are typically flat colours with hard edges: logos, icons, diagrams, charts. JPG was designed for photographs, and it compresses by discarding detail that the eye supposedly will not miss. On a photograph that works beautifully. On a hard edge it produces a faint fuzz of stray pixels along every boundary.

The result is frequently both worse-looking and larger than the same artwork as a PNG. Choose JPG when something specifically requires it, when the artwork is photographic, or when a system you are uploading to refuses anything else.

Transparency becomes white

JPG has no way to store transparency, so every clear area has to become something. White is used here, because that is what people expect and what looks right on a page. If your logo was designed to sit on a dark background, that white will be very obvious, and PNG is the answer.

Choosing a size

The size is a multiple of the SVG's own dimensions, not a DPI figure, because an SVG has no physical size for a DPI to be relative to. 3x is a good default for screens; go to 6x or higher for print. As with any raster format the decision is permanent — enlarging a JPG afterwards only softens it, because the detail was never recorded.

Quality, and re-saving

The quality setting trades file size against fidelity. Above about 90 the gains are hard to see and the file grows quickly; below about 70 the fuzzing around edges becomes obvious on exactly the kind of artwork SVGs contain.

One thing worth knowing: JPG loses a little more every time it is saved. Always export afresh from the SVG rather than editing and re-saving a JPG repeatedly — the SVG is lossless and can be exported as many times as you like.

Should I use JPG or PNG for an SVG?

PNG, almost always. SVG artwork is usually flat colour with hard edges, which is exactly what PNG compresses well and what JPG blurs. Choose JPG only when the artwork is photographic or something demands that format.

Why is the background white instead of transparent?

Because JPG has no way to store transparency. It is a limitation of the format. SVG to PNG keeps it.

What scale should I choose?

A multiple of the SVG's own size: 1x matches it, 3x is a good default for screens, higher for print. Decide before exporting, as enlarging a JPG afterwards only softens it.
