Your PDF rotation keeps reverting. Here's why.

Turning a page in your PDF reader often changes what you see and nothing else. Send the file on and the recipient gets it sideways, which is how a rotation you 'fixed' three times arrives wrong anyway.

Rotation in a PDF is not a redraw. Each page stores a rotation value of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees, and every viewer reads that number before putting the page on screen. That design is why rotating is instant on a thousand-page document and why it costs nothing in quality — no pixels move.

View rotation versus document rotation

Most readers offer a rotate button that changes only your view of the page. It is a display setting, discarded when you close the file, and it never touches the document. Some readers do not make the distinction obvious, which is the whole problem.

Document rotation writes the new value into the page itself. Save the file and everyone who opens it — in any reader, on any device — sees it the right way up.

The quick test: rotate the page, close the file without saving, and reopen it. If it is sideways again, you rotated the view.

Where sideways pages come from

• Automatic document feeders take landscape sheets at whatever angle they were loaded, and a mixed stack comes out mixed.
• Phone photographs carry their own orientation flag, and it does not always survive being placed into a PDF.
• Documents assembled from several sources arrive carrying whatever rotation each source had.
• Some scanners auto-rotate based on detected text and get it wrong on pages that are mostly images.

Rotating some pages and not others

Rotation is stored per page, so a document can legitimately mix orientations — a report with one landscape table in the middle is perfectly normal, and rotating the whole file to fix that one page breaks the other forty. Turn only the pages that are actually wrong.

A rotated scan is still a scan

Does rotating a PDF reduce quality?

No. Only a stored number changes. The page content is not re-encoded, so text stays selectable and images keep their resolution.

Can I rotate a page in a password-protected PDF?

Not while it is locked — the pages cannot be modified until the password is removed. Unlock it first, rotate the unlocked copy, then protect it again if you need to.
